Erwin James Eldridge received his medical degree from Jefferson Medical School in Philadelphia. After graduating at Jefferson, he went to Vienna to complete his studies, it was while in Vienna that the Crimean Wars broke out. He served in the Crimean War as a surgeon and was decorated for his service and time.
He then came home and joined in Americus Ga. Under Gen. Howell Cobb's Reg. first as Assistant Surgeon of the 16th Regt. Ga. Inf. July 19, 1861, then was made Surgeon July 22, 1862. Serving as Chief Surgeon of Gen. Cobb's Command till Jan. 26, 1864. Granted leave of absence with permission to visit Nassau Oct. 10, 1864. When on leave Erwin James Eldridge went to Andersonville and helped were he could with the prisoners, also getting people from town to send food and gingham to help where medicine could not.
Erwin James Eldridge was one of the organizers of the Americus library and was on the Board of Education, he was also a director of the Bank of Southwest Georgia.
Erwin James Eldridge's wife Emma Louise Ronaldson's family deserves mention also. Her older brother Douglas Stuart Ronaldson was an engraver for the USA bindery and Postal Stamps. Her Uncle James Ronaldson was one of the largest type founders in the USA, close friend of Andrew Jackson, Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson. He set aside a large amount of land in Philadelphia for a cemetery for those with no money, the Ronaldson Cemetery.
