He was formerly a patrolman for the Buena Borough Police Dept. for 6 years. Sgt. Gonzalez had been with Franklin Twp. Police Dept. in Gloucester County for 15 years, where he was assigned to the Gloucester County Special Narcotics Division. He passed away at the Cooper Hospital-University Medical Center in Camden.
Franklin Twp., Gloucester County, NJ Sgt. Ippolito "Lee" Gonzalez was shot on May 6, 1995, but died in the early morning hours of May 7, 1995. He was almost at the end of his shift, when at 10:25 p. m., on his way back to the Franklin Twp. Police Station, he saw a car which "just didn't look right." He pulled the car over, called in the license plate number to headquarters. While he was holding the driver's documents in his right hand and reaching up with his right hand to key a microphone attached to the epaulet on the shoulder of his shirt, he was shot. The wound was bad, but not fatal. After he "went down", another shot was fired into the back of his head. That shot was fatal. He was gunned down 540 ft. and 3 inches from the police station. His killers were caught and sent to prison. One was sent to death row. Due to a strange twist of fate (or maybe justice), the killer that was on death row was killed by another death row inmate on September 7, 1999. Lee Gonzalez' murder was the 2nd one for which his killer was in prison.
