At one time Joshua was considered one of the wealthiest men in the southwest, he and his family moving to El Paso Texas on the 1880s. Unfortunately he lost most of his wealth during the depression.
Joshua and his brother, Jefferson, founded the First National Bank in El Paso Texas in 1881. Joshua brought his brother's interest ion 1890 and became president until he relinquished the position to his son-in-law, James McNary. Joshua resigned from the bank in 1930 and moved to New York. He lived with his sister, Mrs Marston Drake.
