Grietje Veenstra was born in 1817 in the country village of Ferwerd, seat of municipality Ferwerderadeel, located in the northern part of the Dutch northern province Friesland, the fourth of nine children and the first of three daughters of the 35 years old laborer Haring Tjallings Feenstra and Aaltje Jans Miedema, named for her maternal grandmother Grietje Engberts.
