Joseph was born to Robert Leviston and his wife Mary Ann Watson of Knockinode, County Wicklow, Ireland, and baptised on the 25th of February 1820 in the parish of Castlemacadam, County Wicklow, Ireland.
He most likely worked as a miner at the local Avoca mine in Ireland before fleeing to the USA during the Irish famine, with his older brother John, and younger siblings Hugh, Charles and Ann. In 1950 Joseph was living in Mifflin, Wisconsin with his brother Charles and sister Ann, and working at the Crow Branch lead mine. Hugh had gone to California to search for gold.
Joseph married Elizabeth Jane Mates (Matteson), the daughter of Richard Matteson and Elizabeth Burns. His brother Hugh married Elizabeth's sister Grace Matteson when he returned from California.
Joseph was registered in the US Civil War Draft Registrations for Wisconsin 1863-1865, and just as the American Civil War was ending his beloved wife Elizabeth passed away in 1865. Joseph continued to look after his children and worked as a farmer on his own land.
