Mr. Yates was a retired carpenter and was a member of the Carpenters Union of Portsmouth.
He was born in Lemaster, Va., Feb. 1, 1883, a son of Robert and Mary Jane Looney Yates.
Surviving are his wife, Lydia Yates; a son, Cecil, at home; eight daughters, Mrs. Lydia Vandyke, Mrs. Doll Burke and Mrs. Gladys Woodruff, all of Lucasville Star Rt., Mrs. Flo Spires and Mrs. Rose Rosenblyth, both of Los Angeles, Calif., Mrs. June Heilman of Grove City, Ohio, Mrs. Lola Haley of Columbus and Mrs. Marilyn Treiber of Waverly; a brother, Andy of Vansant, Va.; two sisters, Mrs. Ada Murphy of Leemaster and Mrs. Kansas Keen of Royal City, Va.; 22 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.
Mr. Yates was preceded in death by his parents and one son.
He was a member of the United Baptist Church.
Funeral arrangements are under direction of Boyer Funeral Home.
