John was the third son born to John and Agnes (Clugston) Riley. He graduated from Caro High School in 1879. He later moved to Boston, Massachusetts where he married Elizabeth A. O'Brien on June 11th, 1890. At the age of 35, John was diagnosed with cerebral softening, which caused his death. He was buried next to his younger brother, William.
