A native of Bowling Green, she was the daughter of the late Dr. Samuel Elliott Cranfill and Lucy Elma Beatty Cranfill. She spent her childhood in Mississippi and Texas and returned to Kentucky in the late 1940s.
A graduate of Georgetown College, class of 1954, she received her Master's degree from University of Kentucky in 1965 and her PhD from Indiana University in 1980. Dr. Curry began her teaching career in 1962 and later became full Professor and Chair of the English Department at Georgetown College. She and her late husband Ralph helped establish the joint program between Georgetown College and Regent's Park College at Oxford University.
Dr. Curry was awarded the Cawthorne Teaching Award in 1992 and was named CASE Kentucky Professor of the Year in 1993. Dr. Curry retired from teaching in 2000, but continued as the director of the International Studies program at the college.
Gwen was an active member, deacon and former church clerk at Georgetown Baptist Church, where she helped write the "History of Georgetown Baptist Church 1810-2010". She recently co-authored her first novel, "Community of Light," with her longtime friends and colleagues, Margaret Greynolds and Dr. Macy Wyatt.
Survivors include two children, Marcie (Jim Thaxter) McGuire, Columbia, MO and John "Skip" (Nan) Slone, Orlando, FL; two step daughters, Jane (Bill) Cutrer, Louisville, KY and Cindy (Tim) Rhyne, Catawba, NC; seven grandchildren, Matthew and Isaac Sleadd, Melissa Slone Dolney, Bill Cutrer, Jennifer Cutrer Snow, Robert Cutrer and Scott Rhyne; several great grandchildren and one sister, Juanita Trotter, Liberty, MO.
Funeral services will be 2:00 pm Saturday at Georgetown Baptist Church by Pastor Alan B. Redditt and Rev. Richard A. Weekley. Burial will follow in the Georgetown Cemetery. Her grandsons will honor her by serving as casket bearers.
