Gary Ray Summers died peacefully at home on Wednesday, April 17.

Gary was born June 8, 1948 in Bonner Springs, KS, to Ethel Ledbetter Summers and Robert L. Summers. He was the ninth of ten children and was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Harold, Fred, George and Danny and his sister Janice.

Survivors include his wife, Jan, daughters Christi Hamilton, Darcy Webb (Chris), and Laura Conwell; his stepson Scott Watts, eight grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters Linda Sylva (Marion), and Kathy Grider and brothers Robert (Caroline), and Ken (Kathy) and many nieces and nephews.

Gary graduated from Wyandotte High School and then served in the United State Marine Corps. He was a Professional Land Surveyor and worked almost 30 years for George Butler Associates in Lenexa, KS.

As a member of St. Thomas the Apostle Episcopal Church in Overland Park, he served in many leadership roles in the church and loved doing so. We are especially grateful to our friends and our faith community at St. Thomas for their love and support during this long journey.

Gary loved life and enjoyed many things – his friends, work, music, nature, golf and sports of all kinds -- but he especially loved his Lord and God, his family and the United States Marine Corps. Semper Fi!

The family would like to thank the staff at the U. of Kansas Cancer Center South who cared for him with kindness and respect and Anna and all of our team from St. Luke's Hospice for comfort and care at the end of his life.

A celebration of Gary's life will be held on Saturday, April 27, at 2:00 p.m., at St. Thomas the Apostle Episcopal Church, 12251 Antioch Road, Overland Park, KS 66213. A reception will follow the service.

In Gary's memory, please consider donations to St. Thomas the Apostle Episcopal Church or to Great Plains SPCA animal shelter.
