AUSTIN, Texas — Joe Eltidge Thigpen, father of Texas first lady Anita Perry, has died at age 92.
First lady spokeswoman Michelle Sneed said Thigpen died "peacefully at home of natural causes" Tuesday morning. He was a graduate of the University of Mississippi and Baylor Medical School in Houston.
Thigpen was a physician in Haskell, where Gov. Rick and Anita Perry grew up.
He was a World War II veteran who met his wife, Beunis Ratliff, while on leave from the Air Force.
Anita Perry said in a statement that "from delivering babies to delivering medical advice, he treated his patients as if they were his family."
In addition to his wife and the first lady, Thigpen is survived by his son Joseph, and daughters Peggy and Emily, seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
