Pioneer of OR Trail
Came via wagon train with parents arrived 28 Oct 1853

After her marriage they lived on farm 4 mi from Jacksonville. Hostile Indians forced them to seek refuge for several months at fort in Phoenix, OR. Mary taught school. Later they moved to Kerbyville operating a store and hotel then various mining camps and in then Albany, OR. His name was placed in nomination for state Treasurer of Oregon. They later moved to Tacoma, WA. where he was a petitioner for the charter of the Tacoma Masonic Lodge. While taking a load of hops to San Francisco on the steamer "Pacific" it was fog-bound and run into by the "Opheus". Only l survivor and only two bodies found. Mr. Vining's body was returned to Steilacoom for Masonic burial. Mrs. Vining raised 8 kids to majority.

The youngest being l year old at Father's death: Kate (Granger), Amelia (Myers), Frank Hoffman, William H., Ralph T., Emma A. (Minkler), Robert Linn and Irving E. At her Father's request, she returned to Jacksonville to live and ran a hotel. She is buried in Vining plot with son Irving and daughter (and son-in=law), Amilia (Vining) Myer
