Ethan Melton was an early pioneer and settler instrumental in creating Navarro Co. out of Robinson Co. in 1846. He established a general store where other settlers received mail and became the first postmaster in Navarro Co. Melton donated land for the Methodist church and cemetery in Dresden. He came to the area to handle the affairs of his brother Eliel who died as an Alamo defender and who was awarded land in the area. He soon married the wealthy widow Lucinda Hill-Langston who died a few years later. He next married Hanna Brown Welch in 1847. He adopted his first wife's two boys and had 7 children with Hanna.
