Daughter of Franklin P Childs/ Chiles (born Virginia) and Ann (White) Childs/ Chiles (born Virginia). She had at least one daughter Fae Tommer (born Abt 1855 in England). Aged 70 years 6 months 18 days. Maiden name also listed as could be Chiles?

The name is CHILES.

Martha (Mattie) J Chiles was the daughter of Franklin P CHILES and Ann White who married in Virginia and moved to Franklin, MO shortly after. Martha was born in MISSOURI not ENGLAND. All sources indicate that. Her mother died very young in 1936 and is buried in the Union Cemetery in Franklin. The first census Martha appeared in was the 1850 census where she appears to be living with her uncle John G CHILES as her mother was dead and the father remarried but the second wife died soon after the marriage. Franklin CHILES was residing mostly in Saint Louis at the time of the census where he was representing Franklin County as an elected representative at times and also was a merchant specializing in shipping of tobacco mostly. His business at one point was called CHILES & Bassett. Eventually Martha was married to Richard F Toomer in Saint Louis in 1854. Shortly after she gave birth to a daughter Zoe Toomer (not Fae as is noted here — there are multiple newspaper entries about Zoe. One where she participated in a VP event and a wedding announcement describing Zoe's marriage to Charles Payn who is on the coroner's certificate here). After her daughter was born, Martha owned a building called St Charles Flats. It is unclear if it is an apartment building or rooming house but more likely the latter. She never remarried and the only evidence of separation or divorce was a court update in 1867 saying Toomer v. Toomer defendant relieved from disability. He remarried in 1869.

Another note on Zoe — It is unclear how Zoe was possibly born in England but sources say both England and Missouri. Her father Richard F Toomer did not seem present in her life and remarried in 1869 to Adelaide Humphrey of Illinois. He was a hat and glove salesman but did not seem to travel internationally. The obituary for his second wife I transcribed and put in her family search profile was very detailed and did not mention international travel. He died in Springfield MO in 1900. Zoe died prior to her mother in Colorado in 1900 and Martha continued residing with her son in law until her death in 1904.
