John married Emily S. Register in 1869 in Clinch County, Georgia. They had 9 children as follows: David Columbus Avery b.Aug 15, 1871; (twins-John Wesley and William Charles b. May 02, 1874; Daniel Homer b. May 1876; Ella Anna b. Feb 15, 1879; Mary Wealthy b. Abt. 1880;Emily Ida b. Feb. 1882; Newman Harley b. Mar 25, 1884; and Thomas Lafayette Avery b. Apr 03, 1893. John R. Avery remarried after Emily's death in 1905 to Mary Sistrunk Dees on 26 Oct 1905. Mary was the widow of Milton Dees whom she married in 1879. Mary Sistrunk Dees Avery died in 1938 in Suwannee County, Florida.
