Religious figure. Co-founder Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary (I.H.M.). Rev Louis Florent Gillet, CSSR, was a classical scholar and linguist who entered the Redemptorists in 1833. After ordination in 1838, he came to the United States, led a group of missionaries to Detroit, with a second foundation in Monroe Michigan. Gillet wanted women religious to educate girls. He contacted Sister Theresa Maxis Duchemin, I.H.M , then a member of the Oblates of Providence in Baltimore. The two established the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary in Monroe on November 10, 1845. While guiding the new religious community, Gillet served missions in a 60-mile radius, rebuilt the parish church and developed a thriving Catholic community. Recalled to the provincial house in Baltimore in 1847, Gillet lost contact with the sisters. After ten years as an itinerant missionary in America, Gillet became a Cistercian in France, ending his years at the Royal Abbey of Hautecombe-Savoy. In 1929, His remains were brought from France to the Monroe, Michigan, motherhouse for entombment in the Father Gillet Memorial Chapel.
