Drowned in McCook Lake.

Drowned While Hunting
Sioux City, April 1 – Alfred Cook of this city was drowned last night in McCook lake, nine miles from this city. He was 18 years old, and in company with another lad, was hunting. He started across the lake in a boat, while the other boy went around, and that was the last seen of him. His cap and gun have been fished out, but the body has not yet been recovered. (Burlington Daily Gazette, Burlington, IA, April 1, 1890)

A young man named Cook, 17 years old, went out duck hunting from Sioux City last Saturday [March 29, 1890] and was drowned in McCook lake. (Sioux City Herald, Sioux County Herald, Orange City, IA, April 3, 1890)

Fred Cook, one of the most popular young men of Sioux City, was drowned Sunday [March 30, 1890] morning while duck hunting on McCook lake in Dakota. George Jackson, one of the party that searched for Cook, in getting out of a boat discharged both barrels of a shotgun into his arm so that it had to be amputated. (Alton Democrat, Alton, IA, April 5, 1890/and multiple other papers)

Still Searching for Young Cook’s Body
Sioux City, April 4 – The search for the body of Fred Cook in McCook lake still continues. It is believed that the corpse lies just below the spot where the boat was found bottom side up, and there all the efforts are being concentrated now. When young Lewis first discovered the boat and tried to haul it to shore, he had to jerk three or four times with all his strength to move it. Suddenly, however, it moved easily, and it seemed that some heavy weight had dropped out of it. It was supposed that this weight was Fred Cook, who had a death clinch on the under side of the boat, which hold was broken by the jerks of young Lewis, and the searchers say they have rolled something two or three times just at that spot, which is about half a mile from the spot where the gun was found. Mrs. Cook is holding up bravely under the terrible affliction. She seems to realize that her boy is dead, and has resigned herself to the contingent sorrows. (Burlington Daily Gazette, Burlington, IA, April 5, 1890)
