On Tuesday afternoon, November 5, 1985, Death's Angel saw fit to visit the Turner home in Chesapeake, VA, and claim Brother Edward Turner. Mr. Turner was born in Southampton County, February 22, 1898, to Hattie Turner, who was later married to Sam Goodwyn. Brother Turner was reared in Southampton County where he received his formal education. Believing that marriage was a sacred part of life, he meet and married Ellen Stacia Harris. To this union, eleven children were born, all of whom survive his
passing.
In 1927, he brought his family to the Eastern Shore and settled in Chesapeake. After living in this area for a short while, he attended and later joined the African Baptist Church. He was content to serve his God in whatever station he found himself. Brother Turner was a loving, devoted husband and father, always doing whatever he could to support his family. He loved his children and grandchildren and they, in turn, loved him. When he came to the Eastern Shore, he was hired as a farmer and later he worked at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard for several years. He returned to the Eastern Shore where he worked for the Virginia Ferry Company. He retired from the Virginia Ferry Company in 1971 and worked for the U. S. Postal Service until 1977. After retiring from the U.S. Post Office, he began farming for himself.
He leaves to cherish his memories, eight daughters and three sons, Martha Owens, Ruth Ellen Freeman, Hattie Ivey, Caldonia Y. Turner, Edith E. Turner Lucille Wilson, Earnie Rowley, Mary Press, Sidney Turner, Willie Turner, and Lynwood Turner; three brothers and two sisters, William Goodwyn, Joshua Goodwyn and Thomas Goodwyn, Ethel Mason and Daisey Lee; one daughter-in-law, four sons-in-law; thirty-four grandchildren; thirty-seven great grand-children; four great, great grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends. .
