Ms. Florine C. Jones was born on January 23, 1923, in Kansas City, Missouri to Maude Jones.

Florine was the sixth child of seven. Her siblings were Helen, Christine, Hilbert, Ruth, Nathaniel and William. Her mother, siblings, and a grandson, Patrick Ewing Jones preceded her in death.

Florine's pride and joy was her son, Donald. As a single mother, she raised her one and only child Donald Harold Jones and instilled incredible values in his life.

Her life was dedicated to making her neighborhood a livable place for all residents. Over forty years as a volunteer, she was the former President of Theron B. Watkins Tenant Association, a board member of Clymer Center and until her illness, acted as liason to the Board of Commissioners of the Housing Authority of Kansas City.

She also was a member of the board of the Samuel U. Rodgers Community Health Center. She was a member of the patient advisory at Truman Medical Center.

Ms. Jones wrote a $50,000.00 grant that was approved by HUD (Housing Urban Development) for resident training.

Improvements made in her neighborhood as a result of her efforts had been as complex as re-organizing the tenant association and the tenant council to better meet the needs of tenants or as simple as encouraging management to install a new laundry facility for the convenience of tenants. No service or need of a tenant went unnoticed if Ms. Jones could help it.

In 1990, the Missouri Lottery honored Florine Jones as a real winner for her positive impact she made in her community. This award was recommended by civic and community leaders from across the state of Missouri.

April 1 2001, Opening Day at Kaufman Stadium Ms. Jones was also honored by the Kansas City Royals for her community involvement. She had been a community activist for much of her adult life.

She loved all the little children. She would buy board games; outside summer games for them play, but along with fun she would teach them responsibilities and respect. She would say pick that up, sweep off the walkway and give way to older people.

Ms. Jones organized the Boys World Club consisting of young boys in the neighborhood ages nine thru twelve, which also taught discipline, responsibilities, love, and respect.

She took those kids on their first airplane ride at the downtown Municipal Airport. She was always striving for ways to improve life skills for all her children in hopes that would give them a head start in life.

Ms. Jones had a strong desire to help people of all ethnics groups, especially the Somalians. She truly felt their struggles as they adjusted in their new country. When they didn't understand what their mail was saying, she went out of her way to make sure they understood. They called her mom and considered her their queen. She took pride in everything she did and was very vocal on what she believed in.

What was most important in her life was God, for without him nothings exist. She accepted Christ at an early age and was a member of Centennial United Methodist Church for over sixty years. Ms. Jones was a member of the Ruth Group at Centennial.

Ms. Jones will be truly missed throughout Kansas City. She was an icon in her community and mother to many.

Ms. Florine C. Jones leaves to cherish her memories, her son, Donald H. Jones, Sr., of Kansas City Missouri; grandson, Donald H. Jones Jr. of Conway, South Carolina; great-granddaughter, Danica Patrick Jones of Conway, South Carolina; sister-in-law, Leila Jones of South Carolina; niece, Ruth Ann Lovett of San Diego, California; a host of great nieces and nephews all of Southern California and most importantly HER CHILDREN in the community.
