ASCUTNEY, VT - Raymond H. Smith, 78, a resident of Ascutney passed away Saturday, April 6 at Cedar Hill Healthcare in Windsor. He was born February 5, 1935 in Windsor the son of Harold and Flora (Kavanagh) Smith. He received his schooling in Windsor and graduated from Windsor High School in 1953. He was a veteran of the US Navy serving in Korea during the Korean Conflict. Following his honorable discharge he returned to Windsor. He married Dora Perry in Windsor on June 28, 1958.

Mr. Smith was employed at the former Vermont State Prison in Windsor as a Sergeant of Guards for several years until the prison closed in 1975. He was later employed as a machinist at the former Cone Blanchard Machine Tool Company until 1983. Ray was a fifty year member of the Windsor American Legion Post #25 and a former member and past president of the Windsor Lions Club. He greatly enjoyed spending time with his family.

His wife of fifty five years, Dora L. Smith passed away on February 10, 2013. He was also predeceased by one granddaughter, Brandy Burridge and by one brother and four sisters.

Survivors include one daughter, Laurie Jean Burridge and her husband, Russ of Newbury, VT, two sons, Raymond C. Smith and his wife, Cynthia of Claremont, NH and Scott F. Smith and his wife Heather of Brownsville, VT, ten grandchildren, Erica Smith, Nicholas Smith and his wife Kayla, Alex Smith, Will Smith, Maddie Smith, Qunicey Smith, Sarah Burridge, Noah Burridge, Matthew Husband and Holly Cannistraci, three great grandchildren, Ella Rose Smith, Madison Husband and Jayden Cannistraci, his mother-in-law, Clara Perry of Plainfield, NH, several nieces and nephews.

At his request a graveside service for he and his wife will be held at a later date in the Ascutney Cemetery in Windsor. Memorial contributions may be made to Cedar Hill Healthcare to benefit the Activities Fund, at 49 Cedar Hill Drive, Windsor, VT 05089 The Knight Funeral Home in Windsor is entrusted with the arrangements.
