Berlie Raymond Etzel Jr., 81, of 113 Berlie Lane, Shippenville, died Wednesday morning, April 10, 2013, at Clarion Hospital.
Born June 3, 1931, near Fern, Clarion County, he was a son of the late Berlie R. Etzel Sr. and Anna Wagner Etzel.
Berlie graduated in 1948 from Ashland High School and then worked in the oil fields with his father's firm in Bradford.
He attended Clarion State College from 1949 to 1953, graduating with a B.S. degree in Education, majoring in math and science.
Because of the Korean Conflict, Berlie enlisted in the U.S. Navy. After attending OCS in Newport R.I., he was a Communications and Operations Officer aboard the USS Loeser for three years.
Upon completing his naval duties in January 1957, he taught in several high schools in Pennsylvania and Delaware. During that time he pursued a degree at Penn State University, receiving a Masters in Education in 1961. He later took additional credits in philosophy and science.
In January 1969 he was appointed Associate Professor of Mathematics at Cheyney State College, retiring in 1986.
As an additional business interest, Berlie worked as a real estate agent and as a life insurance broker.
He was a registered Libertarian since 1980, dedicated and active in both Delaware and Pennsylvania, where he served in many positions.
Berlie was a member and president of the Clarion Historical Society, where he was documenting the Clarion County lost cemeteries.
He was a member and past Commander of DeHart Rossman American Legion Post 997.
Berlie was a member and board member of the Pennsylvania Gun Owners Association, active with the Pine City Hall, and served various positions on the Keystone School Board.
He enjoyed traveling throughout the United States, Civil War history, had a love of the Old West and Native American History, enjoyed hunting, and storytelling local history.
Berlie was a member and Elder at Christ Lutheran Church.
On Nov. 24, 1956, he married the former Rochelle Fischer, who survives.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Vernon Etzel of Oil City and Alan Etzel and wife, Yin, of Havre de Grace, Md.; a daughter, Rhonda Hinsen and husband, Ward, of Albuquerque, N.M.; and six grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Ryan, Kristin, Anna, Mike and Amy.
Also surviving are six sisters, Katherine Nuhfer and husband Wayne, Esther Staab and husband John, Joanne Bell and husband William, Mary Morris, Betty Curtis, and Juanita Kaber and husband Dale; a brother, Thomas Etzel and wife Georgia; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Thelma Steele.

Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Christ Lutheran Church with the Rev. David Oester, pastor, officiating.
Interment will follow in Emmanuel Lutheran Cemetery, Shippenville.
