During the Civil War Guy served as a private with Company C, 12th Regiment, Vermont Infantry. He enlisted September 10, 1862, and on October 7th the Regiment was sent to Washington, DC. On October 30, the 12th Vermont became part of the 2nd Vermont Brigade. During Guy's service, the 2nd Vermont was primarily engaged in defending the perimeter of Washington, providing sentry and picket duty. On December 28-29, the 2nd Vermont helped defend Fairfax Courthouse (Fairfax, Virginia) from "Stuart's Christmas Raid".
Guy died in camp, from illness, on May 2, 1863 in the area of Wolf Run Shoals.
