Michael worked as a therapist for 20+ years in the Cedar Rapids area before retiring to New Mexico in 2002. He worked part-time at Counseling and Recovery, Inc. in Las Cruces before utilizing Hospice care beginning in November 2007.
Michael sought treatment for his own addiction in 1969 after being released from 7 years incarceration in Iowa. Michael was instrumental in starting the Group of Hope group at the reformatory as well as several AA groups in the Cedar Rapids/Marion area. He was the owner/operator of Hutchins Janitorial Service in Marion from 1969 – 1978. He then went to college, earning degrees in Criminal Justice and Psychology. He sought and obtained a pardon from Iowa Governor Robert Ray in 1982.
Michael dedicated his recovering life to assisting others, to being a good husband and to raising his 6 children. He was married to Lynn Jensen Clarke from 1968 to 1980. From 1983 to the present he was married to Sue Meloan- Mikulas.
Cremation took place in Las Cruces. A memorial service will be held at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories on Saturday, February 16, 2008 at 9:00 AM.
The family requests no flowers as a memorial fund has been established.
