In 1851 at Malahide Township (p. 11) is Francis Fitton (Index gives him as "Fitten"), 32, a Clothier, born in England, and his wife, Mary, 25, born in Canada. With them are their children, Sarah, E., 7, Louis A., 5, and Lovina, 2. They are members of the Church of England. It would appear that Francis had died by 1858 and Mary had remarried Charles Young.

In 1861 at Malahide Township, Dist. 1, p. 5, Port Bruce "Charles Youngs" is listed as a labourer who will be 25 at his next birthday. He cannot read or write. He and his family live in a one story frame house. Mary his wife is shown as about to be 33. Their daughter Alice will be 6 but they have only been married 3 years. Also living with them are, Elizabeth Fitton (She was Sarah E. in the 1851 Census), 16, Louisa Filton (sic), 14, and Lovina Fitton 12. The 1861 Census Index incorrectly indicates these girls as having surname "Gritten". They are probably daughters by her first husband Francis. The 1851 Census Index indicates a Francis "Fitten", 32, Clothier from England, with his wife Mary, 25, and daughters, Sarah E.(who married James Young) 7, Louise A. 5, and Lovina, 2.

In the 1861 Census Index for Malahide Township, is Lewis, 21, James and Eliza Burwell, Labourers, from Port Burwell at (Div. 3, p. 12.)

In the 1871 census at Port Bruce, Malahide Twp., Elgin, Ontaro (1-30) Charles Young, 35, born Ontario, Fisherman, next to brother, Sylvanus, with wife Mary, 42 with daughter, Alice A., 14 and a Martha Ferguson, 4. She was the daughter of David Ferguson and Alvina Hodgekinson. David died before 1881.

In the 1876 Malahide assessment roll (p. 1) is a Mrs. Young, "Widdow" owning at Port Bruce, Lots 9, 10 and 10 on Watter, north and Broom Streets. She is living next to Jason Burroughs, a labourer, age 60. In the 1877 roll, Duncan M. Smith, 26, is at lots 5, 6,8 N. Water St. and 2, 4, 9 S. Water St. next to Mary Young at 5, 6, 7 Bruce St. and 7, Water St. There are 3 members in Duncan's family and 2 in Mary Young's family. In 1878 it is a Mary Burwell with two in the family owning property here living next to Duncan M. Smith, with 3 in the family. In the 1883 roll is a James Burwell, 35 with 3 in the family at this property. could this be a stepson? In 1887 he is 37, a fisherman with four people residing in the family.

The Fittons were members of the Church of England. [Numerous records incorrectly give this name as; Filton, Fitten or Fulton, Gritten or Griffen] Mary had been married to Frances Fitton of England (See Parish Reg for Francis Fitton born in England 1820) and had at least three daughters by her first marriage. .

There is a Edward N. Robinson, 27, born England, farm labourer at Port Bruce, who married Eleanor Hilton, 23. They had a child Addison, born 1890/1891. They also had a child born before they were married, Mary Elizabeth Hilton, born illegitimate, 25 June 1889 (Ont. Birth Reg. #007377, where Edward Nicholson Robinson "I consent to above registration as does also the mother." Louise Hilton, 12, was living in Port Buce in 1891 (Div. 1, p. 43). Check 1881 census.

In the 1859 Assessment rolls Charles is listed as a householder, age 22, living at N.S. Water with real property at $100.

In the Port Bruce Post Office Registered Mail Log, there is an indication of a registered letter being sent to a Mary Young in Teeterville on March 9, 1876 and another being sent on March 18, 1876. Could this concern legal matters concerning the death of her father-in-law Rufus?

Instr. # 3670 Rufus deeded his property to Mary C. Young, widow in 1875 Instr. #7099.
Instr. #7618 - On 5 Oct. 1876, Mary Young (widow) granted Lots 5 & 6 on N. Water St. north side to an Alice Adelia Smith. If it is the same Alice, she would have been about 21 at the time. Alice married Duncan M. Smith.
