Obituary text: Called Surgeon Too Late To Save Girl... "Edna Bly, daughter of Mr. Shelton A. Bly of Fawcett Gap, this county, died at 9:20 o'clock this morning at the home of their father, after a week's illness, aged 11 years. The little girl's condition became serious a few days ago, but it was not until late last evening that a message was sent to the city summon-ing Dr. S.P. Latane to her bedside. Accompined by Miss Didier, the head nurse of the Memorial Hospital, Dr. Latane went to the house and found the girl in a critial condition suffering from peritonitis [bad appendictis]. Little hope was entertained of saving her life, but a surgical operation was performed. She lingered until this morning, when she passed away. The little girl leaves her father, two brothers, Godfrey and Herbert Bly; one half-sister Ethel Bly and one half-brother, William Bly. Her funeral will take place from St. John's Church at Taylor Furnace at 1 o'clock on Sunday afternoon and internment will be in the church graveyard. Rev W.J. Smith officiating." - Winchester Evening Star, Winchester, Virginia, July 7, 1909 edition. Edna was the daughter of Shelton A and his first wife Lucy (Estep).
