Elisabeth Groh was born in Schweix,Verbandsgemeinde Pirmasens-Land,Kreis Sudwestpfalz,Rheinland-Pfalz,Germany, daughter of Johann Nikolaus Groh of Schweix and Magdalena Forthoffer of Waldhouse, Moselle, Lorraine, France. She married Balthasar Schmitt in Schweix,Verbandsgemeinde Pirmasens-Land,Kreis Sudwestpfalz,Rheinland-Pfalz,Germany on 9 January 1855. The couple had four daughters born to them before immigrating to Wisconsin and eventually moving to the Menominee area of Cedar County, Nebraska.
