On June 20, 2012, the Virginia State Society of the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) dedicated a memorial to 36 Revolutionary War Veterans buried in the Fincastle Presbyterian Church Cemetery. If Nathaniel is buried in this cemetery, he was buried beneath the church when it was expanded.

It is said that some of the founding fathers of the Fincastle community are buried beneath the church. However most of the Burwell family believed that Nathaniel died in 1801 at Vermont Plantation, King William County, Virginia where he was buried. 1,000 acres of Nathaniel Burwell's estate was conveyed to Walter Hawes February 23, 1802. However, no marker exist at the cemetery on said property to verify his place of burial. Nathaniel is the son of Lewis Burwell IV & Frances Thacker Burwell.
