Dr. Allen Early Jr., 85, of Amarillo died Saturday, April 9, 2005.
Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in First Presbyterian Church with Dr. Jim Bankhead, pastor, officiating. Private burial will be at Llano Cemetery by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.

Dr. Early was born Aug. 7, 1919, in Amarillo to Mr. and Mrs. Allen Early Sr. He was a dedicated husband and father and an enthusiastic supporter of Amarillo and the Panhandle. He taught economics at West Texas A&M University for 14 years.

He was a member of many community organizations, including First Presbyterian Church, Rotary, YMCA, Chamber of Commerce, Better Business Bureau, Opportunity School, HOSTS (Help One Student to Succeed), International Club, Sons of the American Revolution, Panhandle Plains Historical Society and Texas Panhandle Heritage Foundation.

He held leadership positions in most of these groups and served on countless committees, always aiming to leave each organization in a better position than it was when he joined. His faith was constant inspiration to him and it inspired his family and friends. He was a lifelong Democrat, frequently serving as an election judge.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Ratliff Early on Oct. 14, 1999.

Survivors include a daughter, Patricia Early White of London; two sons, James Early of Bethel, Conn., and John Early of Amarillo; and seven grandchildren.

The family suggests memorials be to Opportunity School, 1100 S. Harrison St., Amarillo, TX, 79101; Presbyterian Home for Children, 3400 S. Bowie St., Amarillo, TX 79109; Rotary Club of Amarillo Foundation, 6037 S.W. 34th Ave, Amarillo, TX 79109; West Texas A&M Foundation, Box 60766, Canyon, TX 79016; or Vanderbilt University, V U Station B 357727, 2301 Vanderbilt Place, Nashville, TN 37235-7727.

The family will be at 2409 Parker St.
