Son of Theodor Wolff, chief editor of the Berliner Tageblatt ( also known as the Jewish Journal) until the National Socialist German Workers' Party was elected into power in 1933.

Richard was born in Paris, during his father's exile when the German's burned his books in public. After a failed attempt to immigrate to America, they were arrested by the Italians and returned to France, where they were taken to Drancy Concentration Camp and deported to Berlin. Richard and his father were both imprisoned in Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp. His father sickened and was treated in a hospital. Richard was murdered in Sachsenhausen at the age of 36 years.
