Sachsenshausen was operated as a concentration camp (Konzentrationslager) by the Nazis from 1936 until April 1945 and held mainly political prisoners during this period. After the defeat of the Nazis, the Soviet NKVD used the camp from August 1945 until the spring of 1950 for the imprisonment of Nazi functionaries and political prisoners. Under the Soviets, this camp was renamed NKVD Special Camp Number 7. Over 60,000 persons were imprisoned by the Soviets with around 12,000 of those dying from mainly disease and starvation. After the fall of the East German regime mass graves were identified where these victims were interred and subsequently a memorial to the Soviet victims constructed. These deaths were of course in addition to the many thousands that perished under the Nazis in this camp including many Russian POW's, British commandos and Dutch resistance fighters. In recent years many memorial plaques have been added to the memorial gardens to honour the memory of those who died under the Soviet regime.
