Byron Vannie Porter, age 57, died Thursday, January 6, 1983, in Spartanburg General Hospital.


A native of Blacksburg SC, son of the late Sylvanis Vanie Porter (1891–1978) and Dovie Elizabeth Smith Porter (1892–1955); husband of Susan Jones Porter (1927–2005).


Owner and operator Byron's Beauty Salon for 21 years; security officer at Milliken Plant, Inman; member of Calvary Baptist Church, taught Men's Sunday School Class; member of Gideons; World War II Navy veteran; and a graduate of Burton Junior College, Charlotte, NC, and University Beauty College, Kansas City, MO.


Other survivors include his sons, Byron Thomas Porter and Mark Douglas Porter; daughter, Susan Marie Porter Henderson; sisters, Ruth Porter Hull (1919–1992), Laura Helen Porter Wright (1921–1994), Catherine Sarah Porter Hambright (1932-2008), and Lillian Ann Porter Greene (1927–2001); brother, Lee Ander Porter (1917-1988); and six grandchildren.


Also predeceased by his siblings, Arthur S. Porter (1909–1926), Tillman W Porter (1913–1958), Ray Porter (1915–1978).


Services were held at 2:00 pm, Sunday, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel by Dr. H.H. Hite and Dr. J.M. Ezell; burial with military rites in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.
