Joseph Alexander Baker was a descendant of Matthias and Martha Mercy Todd Vaught, via their daughter, Charlotte Vaught Taylor and David Taylor. Charlotte Vaught Taylor, born in Horry County, SC, in 1803, married David Taylor in 1823. Charlotte died in 1830. Her two children, Joseph and Rebecca Taylor, were raised by their grandparents, Matthias and Martha Mercy Todd Vaught. Rebecca Taylor married James Baker, son of William Baker and Annie Phillips Giles. Rebecca Taylor Baker and James Baker, had a son, Joseph Alexander Baker, who was married first, to Mary J Graham with whom he had a son, James G Baker, who married Annie Monroe.
