Old Resident Passes Away
Mrs. Mauer dies at her Home Following Short Illness

Miss Elizabeth Maurer, one of the oldest settlers of Hartley, passed away at her home in Hartley last Saturday after an illness of about three weeks. The deceased has been ailing for about five years with diabetes, but was not taken seriously until about three weeks ago when she was confined to her bed.

Elizabeth Maurer was born near Stratford, Ontario, Canada, on July 2, 1858, and was baptized and confirmed in the Saint John's Lutheran church at that place.

In the year 1877 she was united in marriage to E.M.Maurer, and later moved to O'Brien county, first living on the home farm northwest of Hartley and later moving to the home place in Hartley.

The deceased leaves to mourn her loss her husband, two sisters, three brothers, and other relatives, who were here to attend the funeral Tuesday afternoon.

Servives were held at the home and in the Saint Paul's Lutheran church on Tuesday afternoon, where the paster, Edw. A. Hoffman, officiated and preached upon Eph. 2, 8, 9, having as the theme "Why need not a Christian fear death." 'because he does notexpect to be saved by his works, but because he expects to be saed by grace through faith in Christ Jesus." The remains were laid to rest in the Pleasant View Cemetery.

A large number of friends attended the funeral to pay their last respects to the memory of the deceased. The relatives present from out of town were: Frank Maurer and daughter from Pittsburg, Kansas, Harry and Walter Maurer, nephews from Lansford, Pennsylvania; Minnie Jennings and Stella Fredericks, nieces, and Clara Aldridge, sister-in-law, from Joliet, Illinois; Henry Steppler, brother of the deceased from LaSalle, Manitoba, Canada, and Maggie Steppler of Myrtle, Manitoba.

The deceased reached the age of 58 years, 2 months, and 28 days. She lived in and near Hartley for more than thirty years, and during that time has made many friends who will sympathize with the family in their bereavement. The funeral procession waws one of the largest that has been held in Hartley for a long time, and it was an expression of the esteem in which this good lady was held by the community.
