HANNIBAL - Faye Johnston Smith, 90, of Bloomington, Ill., and formerly of Hannibal, died at 1:55 p.m. Wednesday, June 21, 2006, at BroMenn Medical Center in Normal, Ill.
A service to celebrate her life will be at 11 a.m. Monday, June 26, at the First Christian Church in Hannibal with the Rev. Steve Barker officiating. Burial will be at Grand View Burial Park in Hannibal.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday, June 25, at the Smith Funeral Home & Chapel in Hannibal.
Jessie Faye Shadwell was born Oct. 15, 1915, in Paris, the daughter of Edgar Herschel and Martha Elizabeth McGinnis Shadwell.
On April 11, 1938, she married G. Arthur Johnston who preceded her in death Oct. 1, 1963. On May 30, 1971, she married Floyd R. Smith. He died Oct. 21, 1992.
Faye is survived by her daughter, Brenda (Al) Azinger of Bloomington; a stepdaughter, Diane Crow of Jacksonville, N.C.; two stepsons, Lyle (Mariana) Smith of Springfield, Mo., and Terry Smith of St. Louis; two sisters, Enid Crim of Hannibal and Jean Chapman of Paris; a sister-in-law, Mary Shadwell; four grandchildren, Catherine (Terrence) McAlister, Natalie (Daniel) Eness, Brian (Misty) Hansen and Craig Hansen; seven additional grandchildren from her second marriage, Jeremiah Smith, Stacie Kirk, Douglas and Rodney Crow, Laura and Judy Smith and Vivian Regna; and numerous great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by Arthur and Floyd; her parents; a daughter, Ardith, who died March 14, 2006; her son-in-law, Bob Hansen; four sisters, Vera Atterberry, Madge Nordlund, Erma Bagley and Ruth Long; three brothers, Edward, John D. and Joe Shadwell; and a nephew, Howard Shadwell.
Faye lived most of her life in Hannibal, but moved in 1995 to Lawrence, Kans., to live near her daughter, Brenda. In 1998, she moved to Tucson, Ariz., to be close to her daughter, Ardith. Recently she moved to Bloomington to once again live close to Brenda.
Faye's mischievous little grin and the twinkle in her eye stayed with her throughout her life and endeared her to all who came in contact with her. Her wit and her spirit provided a model for a life well-lived. The dedication she provided her children was unwavering and through example, she instilled in them a sense of Christian love and responsibility.
During the time she lived in Hannibal she was an active member of First Christian Church and the Lighthouse Chapter No. 194, O.E.S., for which she served as Worthy Matron. She worked as a sales representative at Kilham's clothing store and the J.C. Penney Co. She retired in 1979.
Memorials may be made to the First Christian Church.
