Mary Brown Strong, daughter of William and Margaret [née McDill] Strong and born in the bounds of Chester County, South Carolina, was named for her maternal grandmother, Mary Brown McGill. At the age of eight, her mother died after giving birth to her sister Grizelda; leaving her father a widower with six children.

In 1832, Mary's father moved the family to Lincoln County, Tennessee; joining other families in organizing Prosperity A.R.P. church. In this community, Mary was educated and married Alexander P. Hayes; whose family had emigrated from County Antrim, Ireland through Chester to Tennessee. They were married on January 14th 1839.

Mary and A. P. Hayes had eleven known children:

Mary Brown Strong Hayes raised her children in the bounds of the church they helped start; living in the same home until her death on August 21st 1888. Mary was laid to rest in the churchyard cemetery at Prosperity A.R.P., near her father and three children who preceded her.
