Birth Date: Oct 27, 1938
Death Date: Oct 21, 2009
Birthplace: Phil Campbell, Alabama
Resided In: Coalfield, Tennessee
Shelby Rivers Jackson, age 70, a resident of Coalfield, passed away Wednesday, October 21, 2009 at home while surrounded by her loving family.
Mrs. Jackson was born in Phil Campbell, Alabama on October 27, 1938. She lived several different places before settling in Coalfield in 1953 where she later graduated with the class of 1957, and met and married her high school sweet heart, J.T. Jackson, on February 21, 1959.
She was an active member of Middle Creek Baptist Church for over 45 years where she taught Sunday school, V.B. S., Acteens and served in countless other ways.
Following her graduation she was employed by the Roane Hosiery Mill in Harriman and Red Kap Industries in Wartburg before staying home to raise her family. She later returned to Red Kap until 1996 when ill health forced her into early retirement.
Her hobbies over the years included bowling with the Tri-County league, painting, ceramics, reading, sewing, gardening, but her favorite hobby was cooking. Her specialties were chicken and dumplings and chocolate pies but she could make even dirt taste good!
She will be remembered as a loving woman with a strong faith in God. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and sister. She was a gentle woman who was quick to sacrifice, lend a helping hand or a listening ear;
slow to criticize, anger, use harsh words or gossip. She remained stoic and beautiful through a five year battle with cancer; with an optimistic attitude while her soul remained at peace. She was very much loved and will be sorely missed.
She was preceded in death by her parents John and Ellen Cooper Rivers; and by a brother Bill Rivers.
Mrs. Jackson is survived by her husband of 50 years, Joe Thomas "J.T." Jackson, and children; Judy Daugherty and husband, Darrell, Janna Swint and husband, James, Johanna Cox and husband, Tommy all of Coalfield. She has 8 grandchildren; Carrie Daugherty Sams and husband, Eric, of Birmingham, AL, Rachel Daugherty Britt and husband, Specialist Keith, serving in the army in Afghanistan, Holly Daugherty, Andrea Swint, Hillary Swint, Kayleigh Swint, Jill Carson and Steve Carson all of Coalfield.
She is also survived by a sister Peggy Sands and husband, Frank of Harriman, brothers; Clayton Rivers and wife, Linda of Lincoln, NE, Jim Rivers and wife Susie, of Coalfield and David "Moe" Rivers and wife Melody of Baneberry, TN; and by numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends.
The family will receive friends Thursday, October 22, 2009 between the hours of 6:00 and 8:00 pm at Middle Creek Baptist Church. The funeral will follow at the church with Pastor Ronald Guthrie and Rev. Homer Hooks officiating. Burial and graveside services will be held Friday, October 23, 2009 at 11:00 am at Anderson Memorial Gardens. Sharp Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
