Agnes Katherine (Messina) Bort passed away Wednesday at St. Joseph's Hospital after a brief stay. Agnes or Yaya as she was called by her family, a nickname given to her as a small child by a family friend, was a generous and caring woman. Her home was open to everyone, animals and people alike. There was never a time that she didn't have the companionship of the four legged furry creatures, either cats or dogs or both. In addition to the pets that lived within her home she also cared for the strays that wandered up to her door. No animal walked away without something to eat. Yaya loved to cook and being part of a family of 13 children she learned to cook in quantity. If you left her home hungry after a holiday meal it was your own fault for there were always plenty of dishes. She made her own pasta, sauce, some of the best desserts and other delicacies which will be missed and unfortunately cannot be duplicated because she takes the recipes with her. Yaya was an avid gardener with blooms of flowers and vegetables surrounding her home. There wasn't a plant that she couldn't grow, and of course that's where the tomatoes came from for her delicious sauce. She was predeceased by her husband, Willard Bort in 2006. Yaya is survived by her two sisters, Ruby Messina and Jennie (Messina) Emmi; a brother, John Messina; many nieces and nephews along with her beloved pets, Sparky, Buddy, Casper, Snowball and Mickey. Funeral services will be held on Monday at 9 a.m. in the THOMAS J. PIRRO JR. FUNERAL HOME and 10 a.m. in Our Lady of Pompei/St. Peter Church, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Entombment will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery Mausoleum, Dewitt. There will be no calling hours. Contributions may be made to The Humane Association of CNY, 4915 W. Taft Road, Liverpool, NY 13088.

daughter of Joseph Messina (1886 - 4 Apr 1950) and Carmela (nee Grosso) Messina (6 Oct 1894 - 1 May 1978).
Both parents born in Italy. Immigration: Joseph Messina - 1906 & Carmela Grosso - 1913 per 1930 U.S. Census. Both were buried in Assumption cemetery Syracuse, NY. Resided at 405 Burnet Ave. then later at 409 Burnet Ave.

married Willard Raymond Bort of Baldwinsville, NY on 2 July 1960 in Syracuse.
Agnes had many siblings.

Birth year (1921, 1922 or 1923).
** the U.S. 1930 census has Agnes Messina, age 9, being born in 1921.
the U.S. 1940 census has Agnes Messina, age 18, being born in 1922.
The Syracuse Herald, Sunday Morning, July 10, 1932 newspaper archive article regarding fireworks as a fire cracker expoded and burnt Agnes, age 11, on the leg. She lived at 405 1/2 Burnet Ave. - note: she would not have been 11 years old until September.
Other records/ sources have her birthdate as 12 Sept. 1923.
My belief is that 1923 is incorrect and 1922 should be actual year of birth.
