Tot Drowns in 19-inch Pond Monday

An 18-month-old baby drowned in 19 inches of water in a small pond near its home about 5:30 p.m. Monday in the Cohutta community.

The victim was identified as William Dennis Hopkins, son of Pfc. and Mrs. Henry Raymond Hopkins, Rt. 1. Cohutta.

According to reports, the youngster and an older brother, Phillip Randolph Hopkins, had been left by their mother, and her sister, 19, while the mother drove her brother to work at Lawtex in Dalton.

The child was playing with a little red car in the front room, the sister said. She left it alone for a few minutes and apparently the baby wandered out the front door and to the small pond which is located about 40 feet from the house. The girl said she had missed the baby no more than five minutes when the other child, Randy, found it in the water. She thinks perhaps the toy was dropped into the water and the baby tried to recover it.

The girl and a next door neighbor tried to give the baby artificial respiration. Another neighbor, came along in a car, and the baby was taken to a physician's office in Cohutta where it was pronounced dead.

The small pond which measured only six feet wide and nine feet long, had been dug for a small "swimming pool." It had been dry recently until filled by the rain Sunday afternoon.

Pfc. Hopkins, the father of the victim, is in the Army stationed in Korea.

An investigation of the mishap was carried out by Deputies.
