John M. Hedges
Holton -- Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Denison Bible Church for John M. Hedges, 80, Denison. He died Friday, Jan. 13, 1989, at a Holton hospital.
Mr. Hedges was former mayor of Denison. He owned and operated Hedges Grocery in Denison 18 years. He previously was employed as a federal meat inspector in Omaha 18 years, and had taught at a Maple Hill school five years. Mr. Hedges served in the Navy during World War II.
He was born Sept. 1, 1908, at Larkinburg in Jackson County, the son of Charles and Vietta May Kingman Hedges. He had been a Denison resident more than 35 years.
Mr. Hedges was a member of Denison Bible Church and was a past patron and member of Denison Lodge No. 371, AF&AM, both in Denison.
He was married to Thelma Marie Clark Jan. 22, 1928, at Alma. She survives.
Other survivors include two sons, James Hedges, Chatsworth, Ga., and John Clark Hedges, Pittsburgh; two daughters, Peggy McCrory, Holton, and Marie Hunther, Mayetta; four sisters, Minnie Holeman, Denver, Colo., Mary Hammer, Overbrook, Vietta McAlexander, Mayetta, and Mildred Petty, Eureka, Calif.; two brothers, Arthur Hedges, Topeka, and Fred Hedges, St. Joseph, Mo.; 12 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.
Burial will be in Denison Cemetery. Relatives and friends will meet from 3 to 4 p.m. today at Mercer Funeral Home in Holton.
