Helen Steele, 87, a longtime resident of Basehor, KS, passed away March 28, 2013.
Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, April 2 at Chapel Hill-Butler Funeral Home, 701 N. 94th St., KCK. Visitation will precede the service from 1:00-2:00 at the Funeral Home. Interment will follow the service in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Cancer Action, 1600 Washington Boulevard, Kansas City, Kansas 66102.
Helen was born May 13, 1925 in Bakersfield, Missouri to Arthur Cyrus and Effie Myrtle (Hilgardner) Horn.
She attended Wyandotte High School and then later got her GED. She worked at Providence St. Margaret's as a Nurse's Aide and then later at the VA Hospital as both a nurse's aide and laundry aide. Helen was a longtime member of Wallula Christian Church and volunteered in the Church Library as well as Cancer Action. She loved reading, word searches and spending time gardening and spoiling her grandchildren.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents Arthur and Effie Horn, her son-in-law, Mark Greer, as well as four brothers and one sister.
She is survived by her four children, Tom Steele and his wife Barbara of Basehor, KS, Barbara Pate of De Soto, KS, Ruth A. Rentfro and her husband Johnny of Bartlesville, OK and Gladys Greer of De Soto, KS as well as eight grandchildren, nineteen great-grandchildren and ten great-great grandchildren.

Helen was a wonderful person with a bright smile that lit up the room. Anyone in her presence knew they were with a friend.
She was a twin to her brother Allen and one of 2 girls and 4 boys born to Arthur Cyrus & Effie Myrtle (Hilgardner) Horn and the last of her generation. She was the mother to 1 son and 3 daughters and grandmother to 8 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great grandchildren.
