Rites held for Hilbert Dalton, accident victim

Funeral services were held Saturday in Our Savior Lutheran Church, Highmore, for Hilbert Dalton with Pastor Steve Meyer officiating. Burial was in Highmore City Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Royal Kutz, Rollie Zastrow, Dale Kroeplin, Harland Taylor, Jr., Ronald Heckenliable and James Bonnichen.
Dalton was killed when his pickup truck collided with the Lloyd Rypkema vehicle at the junction of Highway 34 and 45 three miles north of Gann Valley. Dalton was thrown from the vehicle and killed instantly, according to State Trooper Larry Ottenbach.
The Rypkema vehicle was eastbound on Highway 34 and apparently ran a stop sign at the intersection, Ottenbach said. The vehicle struck the passenger side of the Dalton pickup, which was southbound on Highway 45.
The Rypkemas wer flown by air ambulance to a Sioux Falls hospital where he was listed in serious condition; she was listed in critical condition.'
Lloyd Rypkema, 70, is a county commissioner in Pennington County.
Hilbert S. Dalton was born July 21, 1910 in LeRoy, Illinois to Francis M. and Hattie E. (Prather) Dalton and died Sept. 22, 1988 at the age of 78 years, 2 months and one day.
He came with his parents to South Dakota when he was 9 years old and attended high school in Highmore. He farmed near Holabird for a time, before working 30 years for the Hawkinson and Quirk Elevator Co. in Highmore.
He was united in marriage to Ruth D. Taylor at the United Methodist Church in Highmore on Dec. 4, 1936. To this union, four sons were born.
He retired from the elevator company in 1975. He was working part-time at Pioneer Garage, Inc. at the time of his death.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth; four sons: Roger, Highmore; Edward, Brush, Colo.; Leonard, Onida; and Wayne, Pierre; three sisters: Ollie Alumbaugh, St. Lawrence; Beulah Webb, Rodman, Iowa; and Alla Rittel, Sturgis; three brothers: Harley, Highmore; Floyd, Miller; and Louie, Pittsburgh, Pa.; 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers: Elmer and Howard; and one sister, Myrtle Peterson.
