Funeral services for Harley Newton Gant, 89, of Whitney, were held Thursday, April 7, 2005, at Marshall and Marshall Funeral Home Chapel, Whitney, the Rev. Bobby Booth officiating. Interment followed in Hillcrest Garden of Memory, Hillsboro. Gant died Monday, April 4, 2005. He was born Nov. 28, 1915, in Hill County, the son of Jesse Newton and Ida Jones Gant. He married Prudence Irene Miller on Nov. 3, 1934, and she preceded him in death on July 1, 1997. He was a contractor in the concrete business for 19 years, retiring in 1979. He was a member of Towash Baptist Church, and he loved to fish and garden. He was described as an extremely hard worker. Gant was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; and sons Bobby Gant and Don Gant. He is survived by son Steve and wife Sarah Gant of Peoria; brothers-in law Gerald Frazier of Waco and Gene Miller of Whitney; sisters-in-law Marie Miller of Lampasas and Neva Miller of Whitney; nine grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to Towash Baptist Church, P.O. Box 1141, Whitney, TX 76692; or Bethlehem Cemetery Association, P.O. Box 234, Whitney, TX 76692. Marshall and Marshall Funeral Directors, Whitney, was in charge of arrangements.
