In 1746 he married Sarah Taylor in Hempfield Township following Quaker traditions. They had thirteen children: Hannah (died in infancy), Eleanor, Hannah (died in infancy), Robert, John, Samuel, Hannah, Thomas, Elizabeth, James, Sarah, Susan, and Rhoda.
In 1761, fourteen years after his father died, Robert, Jr., received 62 acres from his mother according to instructions written by his father. In 1775 he served as a first lieutenant in the first company formed in Hempfield Township. In 1782 he died at the age of 59.
