The patriarch of the famous family synonymous with law enforcement in San Bernardino county. Mr. Shay a cooper by trade was born in Nova Scotia but arrived in San Bernardino "by way of Boston, San Francisco and Los Angeles," in the 1850s. Mr. Shay secured 160 acres for the paltry sum of $900 from the Mormons. Another 100 acres of government owned land was added at a cost of $2.50 per acre later. Thereafter Mr. Shay spent the remainder of his life working as a citrus grower. Mr. Shay died in 1899 of injuries sustained when he was thrown from a horse on his property located in what is now a part of East Highland.
