SEARSPORT - Carl Burton Robbins, 85, lifelong resident of Searsport, passed away peacefully March 25, 2013, at the hospice center of Waldo County General Hospital, Belfast, after several years of declining health. Carl was born April 13, 1927, in Searsport, to Vivian (Vincent) and Arthur E. Robbins.

Carl graduated from Searsport High School in 1944. During World War II, Carl worked at the docks in Searsport loading munitions onto ships. After joining the Navy in January 1945, he went to McAlester, Okla., where, as he told it, he unloaded that same ammunition at the naval ordnance depot there. After his discharge, Carl attended the University of Maine. In 1948 he married Evelyn Young of Searsport. The couple moved to Cincinnati, where Carl attended Cincinnati School of Embalming. He returned to Searsport to operate Young's Funeral Home on West Main Street with his father-in-law, Fred Young. Upon Fred's death in 1952, Carl became the sole proprietor and successfully ran the business for nearly 40 years. He also operated a monument business, Robbins and Swift, with Myron Swift of Searsport. He was very proud of his role in the construction of the new elementary school and gymnasium on Mortland Road in the 1960s. In the days before emergency medical services, Carl ran the ambulance service for the town.

Carl is survived by his three daughters and their families, Rebecca and her husband, Edgar F. Raines Jr., and son, Edgar J., of Alexandria, Va.; Deborah and her husband, Charles Plourde, of Searsport, and their daughters, Katherine and husband, Andrew Bailey, and their son, Benjamin, of Searsport, and Jessica Plourde of Dillon, Colo.; and Cynthia and her husband, Peter Dalton, of Northport, and their daughters, Laura and husband, Corey Benner, and son, Greyson, of Arlington, Va., and Andrea and husband, David Coulon, and daughter, Abigail, of Manchester, N.H. He also leaves behind special friends, Pete and Barbara Pearson, with whom he and Evelyn enjoyed many special traveling excursions, and Helene Whitehouse, all of Searsport. Carl was predeceased by his wife of 61 years, Evelyn, in 2009; his parents; and his brother, Ellery.
Burial will be in the spring in Gordon Cemetery, Searsport. (Bangor Daily News 3/27/2013)
