Esther was named after her aunt, Dr. Esther Lovejoy of New York. Dr. Lovejoy (Aunt Het) to the family) was President of the American Women's Hospitals organization, the Medical Women's International Association and a member of the American Red Cross Commission to France in World War I. Her office was in Rockefeller Center in New York City. One of Esther's high school year highlights was the summer of 1958. That summer Aunt Het took Esther age 16, sister, Mary Charlotte, then 18 and cousin Nancy Snook, age 17 on an extended six week plus tour of Europe.
In London, the Queen Mother honored Aunt Het for all of her world medical work at a special ceremony. The group then spent considerable time in Paris and Rome and many other countries. Esther had great memories of that trip of a lifetime. Esther was a talented musician. She played the clarinet in the high school band, played the piano and served as the church organist for several years. Esther married Reed Skinner of Salmon soon after graduation. They had one son, Frederick Richard Skinner. They later divorced. In 1964 Esther married Jim McElhaney of Montana and the young couple moved to Las Vegas, Nevada for employment. Esther and Jim had two children: Michael Hughes McElhaney (1966) and JoAnna Elizabeth Phillips (1969). They later divorced but remained good friends for the past forty years.
After Joey was school age, Esther resumed employment. She worked at various office jobs including a title company and then had a job offer from the Clark County District Attorney's Office. This job was a six month temporary grant position (at $710 per month) that turned into a twenty nine year career with Clark County. She was a very dedicated and loyal clerk/executive assistant. In 2004 she retired and spent time in Salmon helping care for her mother. After Elizabeth passed away in 2007, Esther returned to work part time as an assistant to the Clark County Court Information Officer. They were the liaison between the media and the courts. One of her first media cases the O.J. Simpson criminal trial. For his trial Esther helped prepare 575 media badges and helped with the daily lottery drawing for people interested in getting into the courtroom to observe the trial.
