John A. Friesen, 82, of Henderson, NE, passed away Sunday, March 24, 2013 at Henderson. He was born October 27, 1930 on a farm near Henderson to Frank and Anna (Thiezen) Friesen. His years growing up on the farm were spent with his 5 brothers and 2 sisters. He spent many happy hours entertaining his nieces and nephews. Many of them still come to visit and tell wonderful stories of growing up with Uncle John. One particular story involved John single-handedly beating about 6 nieces and nephews in a game of tug-of-war. They thought he was as strong as Hercules! Each nephew or niece was his pride and joy!
John and Leora Siebert were united in marriage on September 5, 1950. To this union five children were born: Allen, Karen, April, Wesley, and Linda. They were later blessed with 6 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild. During their 62 years of marriage they were rarely apart, working side by side every day.
Faith in Jesus was a very important part of his life. He was baptized in 1949 and became a life-long member of Bethesda Mennonite Church. John and Leora enjoyed many years of teaching Sunday night CE, Sunday School, and midweek classes and he was always pleased to be remembered by his former students. Evening devotions with his wife Leora were a part of his daily routine and a blessing in his life. Together they read the Bible through several times. John made a special point every night to spend time in prayer for each of his children and grandchildren.
Farming was a big part of John's life. After he lost his hand in a farm accident when he was just 19 he continued to farm with his wife at his side. Despite his handicap, they always found a way to get things done. Following his retirement in 1990, he continued to help on the farm for many years. He never lost interest in the farm. When he was no longer able to help he spent many evenings going out for a ride to see the crops grow!
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Abraham, Walter, David, Herman, and Herb; sister Esther Kroeker; son Allen and daughter April.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife Leora; daughters, Karen (John) Martens and Linda Graham; a son Wesley (Leta) Friesen; grandchildren, Marie (Patrick) Garmoe, Kiley (Ryan) Carman, Ashley (Justin) Ervin, Grant Friesen, Madison Graham and Abigail Graham; great-grandson August Graham; twin sister Marie (Harold) Epp; sisters-in-law, Norma Friesen, Lorene Friesen, and Estaleen Quiring all of Henderson; nieces, nephews and many friends.
John in his own quiet way has been a blessing to his wife, children, grandchildren and many others around him. We will miss his kind and gentle presence. God has been so good to us. Praise His name!
Graveside services will be held at 10:15 am Thursday, March 28, 2013 at the Bethesda Cemetery, Henderson. Memorial services will follow at 11:00 am at the Bethesda Mennonite Church in Henderson. Visitation will be from 1-9 pm Tuesday and 9 am-9 pm Wednesday at Metz Mortuary in Henderson. The family will be present to greet friends from 6-8 pm Wednesday evening. Memorials may be directed to ‘Day Spring' in care of Bethesda Mennonite Church.
