WALKER, Eleanor (Gravely)
"The Lynchburg Virginian"
13 Jul 1829: p3, cols 4 and 5
On Saturday, the 27th of June, Mrs. Eleanor Walker, the amiable consort of Elder Arnold Walker of Henry County, Virginia, breathed her last.
Consumption, with its slow but certain steps, had long been praying upon her; in the meridian of her age, with many virtues to endear her to her husband, her children and all who knew her, it has severed the silver cord, and she has gone from this to another state of being.
The writer was personally acquainted with her -- he knew her well:
foibles she had, but they were obscured by her virtues; The virtues of Religion were strikingly exemplified in her, in all her social relations; her husband, her realtives and friends have abundant cause of consolance in her death; "they ought not to weep as those who have no hope." With hopes big with immortality among saints in light, she has left them-fallen asleep in the arms of Jesus, her king, her husband and Redeemer. She was a memeber of the Baptist Church.
The following lines are so apposite that it would be an act of injustice to withhold them from the reader.
The Saint's farewell to the body
Farewell! farewell, my fainting flesh, our union here now ends.
The marriage bond by Heav'n once ty'd, death now asunder rends.
Beneath thy roof in joyless mood, I many a day have pin'd
Unmindful still of him who had such jerring partners join.
NOTE: BURIAL SITE FOR ELEANOR GRAVELY WALKER PROVIDED BY MARGARET MYERS. The Walker Cemetery is located on the Henry County, VA, end of Deer Trail Road. The cemetery has been fenced in with the exception of a few graves. Eleanor Gravely Walker, first wife of Arnold Walker, is one of the burials outside the fenced area. It is in a wooded area and her name is hand-carved in the stone.
