He was born in Eastport, Maine, and lived in Port St. Lucie for 15 years, coming from Portland, Maine.
He worked for the Internal Revenue Service in Maine for 36 years.
He served in the Navy during World War II.
He was a member of First Baptist Church of Port St. Lucie.
Survivors include his wife, Ada Matthews of Port St. Lucie; daughters, Joanne Shenning of Port St. Lucie and Mary Louise Mendoza of Portland; son, John Matthews of Chandler, Ariz.; eight grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his son, Wesley Reid Matthews.

Visitation will be conducted from 6 to 8 p.m. Jan. 12 at the Aycock Funeral Home chapel in Port St. Lucie. A service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Jan. 13 at the funeral home with the Rev. Brian Harrington of First Baptist Church officiating.
Burial will be in Fernhill Memorial Gardens, Stuart.
