ELMER SHAFFER

Mr. Elmer Cyrus Shaffer, age 93, died late Saturday evening, April 30, 1988; at his home on 10734 Sunfield Highway, Sunfield.

Born to Cyrus and Julia Reinsmith Shaffer on May 11, 1894 in Sunfield Township, and their last surviving child.

On March 31, 1915 in Sunfield, Eaton County, Michigan, Elmer married Elizabeth Eleanor "Libbie" Bale. Daughter of Gideon Bale and Annette "Nettie" Barnum. To this union two children were born; Betty June and Charles Alfred. On May 27, 1942 at the St. Lawrence Hospital in Lansing, Michigan, Libbie passed away after a short illness.

January, 1943 Elmer married Mrs. Margaret M. "Maggie" Joppie Cook, daughter of William Joppie Sr., and Josphine "Josie" VanDer Jagt. Maggie first married Arthur Lacy Cook on February 9, 1918 in Nashville, Eaton County, Michigan. Per Sunfield Cemetery Records, Maggie was born March 18, 1897 and passed away April 15, 1962 with burial on April 18, 1962.

October 5, 1963, Mr. Shaffer married Mrs. Gladys Christina York Tran. She is the daughter of Elias York and Lucinda Wilson. Widow of Ross Emanuel Tran. On October 17, 1963, The Sunfield Sentinel wrote the following wedding announcement; Wed In Parsonage ~ United in marriage were Mrs. Gladys Tran and Elmer Shaffer, both of rural Sunfield. The Rev. Eugene Friesen performed the ceremony in the Sunfield Methodist parsonage October 5. Mrs. Shaffer's sister and her husband from Ithaca were present at the service. The couple spent their wedding trip in Northern Michigan and now are at home on Bippley road. Gladys passed away January 10, 1986 and is buried in the East Sebewa Cemetery, Ionia County, Michigan, alongside her first husband, Ross Tran.

Mr Shaffer is survivied by his two children, Mrs. Betty Rairigh of Vermontville and Charles Shaffer of Grand Ledge and one step-daughter Mrs. Grace Cook Gutchess of Vermontville.

A niece raised from early childhood, Mrs. Valeta Guy Bosworth.

Eight grandchildren and two step-grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren and three step-great-grandchildren.

Mr. Shaffer was one of eight children; all of whom pre-deceased him: Six sisters - Dora Holton, Gertie Guy, Addie Guy, Reta Litchfield, Vernie Cheal, Lela First. And one brother, Claude Shaffer.

Mr. Shaffer was a life long Eaton County resident and a retired farmer; a member of Eaton County Farm Bureau for many years and a member of the Sunfield Senior Citizens; and attended the Sunfield Church of the Brethren.

For the last 28 months Elmer has had the devoted live-in care and companionship of Gerald and Speed Luscher of Portland.

Funeral services were conducted on May 3 at the Mapes-Fisher Funeral Home in Sunfield. The Rev. Gordon Binns officiated. Interment was in Sunfield Cemetery.

Pallbearers were John Rairigh, Jon L. Shaffer, Gary Gutchess, Charles E. Shaffer, Marlon E. Shaffer and Ned Bosworth.
