It is believed that the date of birth on James' stone is incorrect, as his father was remarried to Nancy W. (Rowland) Keith on June 23, 1841, in Van Buren County, Iowa. Census records indicate that he was born about 1839/1840, Iowa.

James married Lydia A. Pickerel on February 26, 1863, in Wapello County, Iowa. Some people believe that Lydia died in Oregon, Holt County, Missouri, in 1879 or 1881. In the 1885 census of Wapello County, Iowa, there is a son William W. Moss age 4, born in Kansas. Therefore, 1879 is probably wrong unless James remarried shortly after Lydia's death in 1879 and was widowed again by the 1885 census.
